You'll have to look closely at the images in "Erotica," the new exhibit by Magnus Johnstone. That's because the painter uses the Junglist method, and his work sometimes takes a moment to decipher. (Junglist is a method Johnstone created that parallels the style of techno music he plays on his radio show. Oh, did we forget to tell you? The artist is also an important disc jockey in Boston.) Glance at it and you see colorful but meaningless shapes. Look again, and figures start to form. The people and backgrounds are made up completely from multicolored stripes.
There's a nude woman. There's another nude woman surrounded by dolphins. There's a nude woman sitting down with her legs spread apart and her hand in her crotch. The longer you look, the more details appear. Johnstone also gives us the same images in simple line drawings, which reveal things that are difficult to see in the abstract versions. (The woman with the open legs? She's surrounded by monkeys and trees.) Opening reception 7 to 9 p.m. December 18. Regular viewing hours are noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. Through January 27, 2011. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
