Fat Tony: 20Hertz: Smart Ass
Anthony Obi, better known to Houston rap fans as Fat Tony, is definitely one of our city’s cultural treasures. He’s got legions of fans, and has won the Music Award for Best Underground Hip Hop several times. And he’s making a name for himself nationally, garnering attention from both the press and fans. But who’s the man behind the flow? Find out at Fat Tony: 20Hertz: Smart Ass, a lecture/performance series at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. The presentation features Fat Tony, a musician who can bring up 2Pac and Morrissey in the same sentence, dishing on the artists and movements that have influenced him, as well as examples of how he crafts his unique form of hiphop. Expect topics to range from Nirvana to Whataburger to Dadaism (and he advises you to bring tissues).
“When we began to look for speakers for 20Hertz we wanted to find Houston natives who exemplify the creative talent and ambition that we feel this city cultivates,” says Connie McAllister, CAMH director of community engagement. “Fat Tony uses traditions such as chopped and screwed music to create new beats and bars that both complement and expand upon the style’s original signatures. He’s able to relate to a diverse and eclectic audience by arranging language and sound together in exciting and unexpected ways.”
