For the Man: The 9-to-5 Show
Filmmaker and arts activist Stephanie Saint Sanchez is redefining what it means to be a working artist. Its well known that art rarely pays the bills most artists hold down 9-to-5 jobs, producing art on their own time. So for the exhibit Saint Sanchez curated at Gallery 1724, For the Man: The 9-to-5 Show, Saint Sanchez challenged artists to strike back at this state of affairs by producing art in their non-arty workplaces. Contributors two-timed their employers by creating art while on the clock.
One contributor, Julie Wallace, says, A lot of artists feel they have to hide the best parts of themselves at work. I know performance artists especially if their work is about sexuality who have to create whole separate online identities. Some of them are teachers. The series of work Wallace has contributed to The 9-to-5 Show is called Hidden Pussy at Work and consists of picture postcards of her vagina, which fans can purchase for $3 and then deposit in the hiding places at their own workplace, just as she shows herself doing in hers. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Through June 25. 1724 Bissonnet Street. For information, call 713-582-1198 or visit www.gallery1724.blogspot.com. Free.
