Framing Dance

Modern dance is notoriously confusing, even for seasoned fans. Some dancers revel in the mystery, but others, like Travesty Dance Group director Karen Stokes, want to help to make their art more accessible. To that end, Travesty presents tonight’s Framing Dance and Beyond, An Interactive Dance Event, a collection of the company’s new and old works that hopes to answer the question “What does dance mean?” They’ll start with the premiere of Snapshot Cinderella, demonstrating abstraction through a retelling of the fairy tale. A few of their repertory works, including Shall We and Bayou, will follow, and they’ll wind things up with a look at a work-in-progress. Stokes, who directs the dance program at the University of Houston, is a seasoned teacher of both students and audiences, so even the greenest of the crowd should leave with a fuller understanding of modern dance’s moves. 7:30 p.m. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby. For information, call 713-315-2525 or visit $5 to $10.
