If you follow Texas politics, As Texas Goes…How the Lone Star State Hijacked the American Agenda by New York Times columnist Gail Collins should be of special interest. Collins, who’s coming to town today for a talk hosted by the Progressive Forum, argues that a lot of today’s political issues — banking and environmental deregulation, guns, state’s rights and the origins of the Tea Party — began here. “I’m certainly crazy about the people in Texas,” Collins recently told Salon.com. “But Texas has both managed to lead the country in paranoia about the federal government and dictate a great chunk of this national agenda over the last 30 years, which is kind of a strange combination.” She also notes that Houston is “a weird place…but it does have an energy.” Ah, okay. 7:30 p.m. Wortham Center, 501 Texas.
