Galveston, The Musical
Houstonians may think Galveston has always been a sleepy little laid-back island. But take a look at the islands history, and youll see thats hardly the case. Galveston has a colorful history, one thats been turned into a sultry Broadway-style musical making its world premiere here. Galveston! The Musical follows the story of Sam and Rosario Maceo, two real-life Sicilian brothers who arrived there in the early 1900s to open a barbershop.
Once Prohibition arrived, the brothers figured out that their customers were more interested in bootlegged wine than in haircuts. The two began to wind their way through the world of organized crime, building lounges and bars all over the seaside town. In fact, they built the swanky Balinese Room, which survived even after Galvestons nightlife started losing ground to the bright lights of Las Vegas.
The island city has a great story to tell, one thats filled with action and adventure. With music and lyrics by New York-based writer Mark York and a wild book by Bob Wilkins, Galveston! The Musical promises to do the Maceo Brothers proud. 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Through October 9. Hobby Center, 800 Bagby.
