Georgian State Dance Company
Though the schedule might say The Georgian State Dance Company, dont expect a hoedown or interpretative dance on the life of Jimmy Carter. This program of folk dances reflects ceremonial and comic aspects of the history of Georgia the Eurasian country that was formerly part of the Soviet Union. What impresses me most about this company is the sheer athleticism of the dances, says Paul Beutel, artistic director of the Miller. And its different from anything weve done before for sheer size alone. There are 75 dancers in this company! Members sport colorful traditional costumes while performing solo, duo and group dances to music with tongue-tying names like the Kazbeguri and the Adjaruli. And whats a Georgian dance party without the Davluri-Sadarbazo? Sadly, Georgias greatest dancer, the late James Brown, will not be on the bill.
