Acclaimed pianist and composer Geri Allen has performed with a whos who of jazz musicians, including Clark Terry, Dewey Redman, Betty Carter, Marian McPartland, Billy Taylor and Meshell Ndegeocello. She makes her debut with Da Cameras jazz series today when the Geri Allen Trio with Gary Bartz takes the stage.
The past year was an excellent one for Allen, with two of her recordings singled out by the Village Voice, Jazz Times and NPR Music, among others, as top jazz CDs of the year. NPR Music called Flying Toward the Sound a remarkable solo recording, going on to say, Theres a dense, dreamy lyricism to the whole thing.
Like Allen, veteran sax player Gary Bartz has an excellent résumé; hes performed with several jazz giants including Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and Art Blakey. Allen and Bartzs pairing should be explosive. 8 p.m. Wortham Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-524-5050 or visit www.dacamera.com. $30 to $50.
