Don't come to the Classical Theatre Company's production of Ghosts expecting something light and frothy. Through press materials, company Artistic Director John Johnston admits, "Ghosts is an intimate but powerful play that asks a lot of its actors and its audience." This is Ibsen, after all, and like his other works, Ghosts takes aim at the morality and mores of his time. The play chronicles the life of the widow Helene Alving over the course of one day. She's about to dedicate an orphanage in the name of her late husband, but the event brings up some long-denied feelings about her former spouse. Not at all the kindly, generous gentleman he was thought to be by those outside his family, Mr. Alving was in fact lecherous and hateful. Betrayal, incest and euthanasia all rear their ugly heads before the day's out, and Mrs. Alving will never be the same. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Monday, October 11; 2:30 p.m. Sundays.
