In the musical Hairspray, 1960s teenager Tracy Turnblad, a plus-size girl, loves to dance. When she lands a coveted spot on the local TV dance program, shes thrilled until she realizes that she cant share the dance floor with her African-American friends because the shows segregated. Ever the upstart, Tracy sets out to integrate the show and manages to get a cute boyfriend and fabulous hairdo in the process.
Campy and over-the-top, Hairspray is filled with exuberant singing, nonstop dancing and broad acting, with a few civil rights messages layered in, too. Hits Theatre puts the show on at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Through April 16. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Drive.
