"Hand + Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft"
Visual art is usually displayed static and complete, while performance art is observed live and in-progress. But put them together and the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts. That's certainly true for "Hand + Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft," currently at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. It hosts 20 artists who will display their works and incorporate performance aspects to the exhibit at both on- and off-site events. Events include crochet nights, in which knitters are invited to add to an installation created by Sheila Pepe; a performance of Anne Wilson's Wind-Up: Walking the Warp, in which Wilson will wind yarn across several carefully measured posts to create something that has an almost ethereal, translucent look; and a few nights when Gabriel Craig will create small articles of jewelry for those he encounters. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
