Hank Hancock and Harbeer Sandhu: Your Tax Dollars at Work

Three years ago, Wayne Dolcefino, an investigative reporter for a local television station, railed against the Houston Arts Alliance, claiming Houstonians’ tax dollars were funding local artists’ works that were often offensive or failed to be produced. (Actually, it’s hotel taxes paid for by out-of-towners that fund the Alliance’s grants.) As a tongue-in-cheek nod to Dolcefino’s sensationalized report, friends and HAA grant winners Hank Hancock and Harbeer Sandhu named their collaborative reading “Your Tax Dollars at Work.” Hancock is the author of Broke, a multi-series zine that’s set in Houston during the suspenseful days just before Hurricane Rita (and an occasional Houston Press contributor). Sandhu is an author and poet. The pair will read from new works today at 7 p.m. East End Studio Gallery, 708 Telephone Road. For information, call 832-330-4464 or visit www.eestudiogallery.com. Free.
