Hansel & Gretel
Sometime in the late 19th century, Engelbert Humperdinck's sister went to him with a series of songs that she'd written for her children as a Christmas gift. The songs were based on a classic fairy tale. The result of the collaboration produced Hansel & Gretel, one of the most classic children's operas ever, being presented this week as part of the Houston Grand Opera's Opera to Go series. Via press materials, HGO says of the show, ''Our adaptation of this children’s classic follows a brother and sister as they embark on a life-changing journey into the woods.'' That's a rather interesting way to say two kids burn their captor alive before she can eat them. We're just saying. 11 a.m. daily. Through September 28. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Drive. For information, call 832-487-7102 or visit www.milleroutdoortheatre.com. Free.
