Houston Film Critics Society 2008 Awards Presentation

Film buffs now have an excellent reason to take a nice long break from their last-minute shopping thanks to The Houston Film Critics Society 2008 Awards Presentation. This year marks the second time this group has gotten together to grant awards and the very first time they’re holding an actual ceremony — followed by a little party, of course. Last year’s winners included the Coen brothers and the Greenway 3 Theatre, among many others. And psst, just between you and me, this year The Dark Knight is getting lots of buzz. But you won’t know the winners till you get there.

Don’t expect to see any stars, but you can rub elbows with the “Society” members, including some of Houston’s bright lights such as Regina Scruggs of KUHF, TJ Callahan of KILT and Jake Hamilton of Great Day Houston. Watch a few film clips, hang out at the swanky reception and fraternize with a roomful of other like-minded souls — the sort who’d give up some time on the Saturday before Christmas to give a little more love to the movies. 4 p.m. Museum of Fine Arts, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-303-7560 or visit www.mfah.org. Free.
Sat., Dec. 20, 4 p.m., 2008
