Houston Indie Book Festival

While the word "indie" is frequently tossed around in the film and music industries, it also applies to books, as you'll see at the Houston Indie Book Festival. Now in its third year, the festival will offer books and magazines from more than 40 mostly Texas-based publishers, magazines and booksellers. There will also be readings throughout the day. "Houston has a very vibrant literary scene," says Kirby Johnson, editor at NANO Fiction and festival co-organizer. She adds that there's been a recent boom in self-publishing and small presses. "Writers are now taking matters into their own hands, and you find a lot of unique, quality work coming out, especially in mystery, romance and occult genre fiction, as well as children's books." 10 a.m. to 5 pm. Menil Park, 1515 Sul Ross. For information, visit www.indiebookfest.org. Free.
