Invisible Lines: Up Against You: The Sordid Path of Debra Matthes
The new poetry performance group Invisible Lines makes its debut with Up Against You: The Sordid Path of Debra Matthes, based on her 2003 chapbook of the same title. “She’s a really incredible poet; her words carry a strong, emotional punch,” says show director Bucky Rea. “It’s a really good way for us to kick off.” Based on the poems of Houston spoken-word artist Debra Matthes, the production tackles some tough issues. “It touches on a variety of topics,” says Rea, “like sexual abuse, harsh interpersonal relationships and, eventually, a transformational moment. This is readers theater and it’s not a story told in chronological order, but it’s an emotional arc of what happens to people who get knocked around before they find resolution. We wanted something that would be challenging for the audience.” 8 p.m. AvantGarden, 411 Westheimer. For information, call 832-651-2561 or visit www.invisiblelines.net. $5 to $10.
