Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

Tamra Davis’s documentary Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child is based on her never-before-seen 1985 interview with the charismatic Basquiat. Radiant Child captures Basquiat’s spectacular but short-lived career. Starting as a graffiti artist in New York City the 1970s, Basquiat first put his work on canvas in 1981, reaching superstar status by 1983. He became friends with the ultimate art superstar, Andy Warhol, in 1985. Just a year after Warhol unexpectedly died in 1987, Basquiat died of a drug overdose at age 27. The film features recollections of the artist by friends Glenn O’Brien, Julian Schnabel and Fab 5 Freddy, among others. While nothing, not even a definitive documentary like Radiant Child, can fully explain Basquiat’s meteoric rise and fall, the film does capture the New York art scene in which he flourished. 7 p.m. Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday. 14 Pews, 800 Aurora.
