Comedian Jo Koy got his start in stand-up through his hairdresser. After an offhand comment about his comic aspirations, the stylist introduced Koy to a friend who owned a coffee shop that featured regular comedy nights, and his career began.
Koy, a regular on Chelsea Lately, just premiered his new special, Lights Out. He most often discusses family (his son and mother unintentionally give him lots of opportunities to poke fun at them). He also mines plenty of material from his mixed Filipino heritage.“I hate it when people don’t just ask and try to figure out what I am,” he says. “They go, ‘Hmm…do you eat rice? Are you a bad driver? Are you good at math?’ And I just say, ‘I’m Asian!’ And people go, ‘Oh really, I love orange chicken!’ What the hell is that? That’s not a compliment! But you know…orange chicken is good! It’s delicious! But if you want to thank someone, thank the Mexicans. They’re the ones cooking Chinese food in L.A.” 8 p.m. Thursday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Improv, 7620 Katy Freeway. For information, call 713-333-8800 or visit www.improvhouston.com.
