Ordinary #2 pencils are the focus of the
“Jonathan Clark: Tracing Towers” exhibit. Well, actually, not
ordinary #2 pencils. Clark, the gallery and installation assistant at the Rice University Art Gallery, has produced a series of oversize pencils (some stand as tall as their viewers) in a playful examination of the golden ratio or divine proportion (a mathematical relationship between objects that is thought to produce the most visually appealing image). Clark, a Houston-based multi-media artist, works with found objects, repurposing them into works that explore the intrinsic mathematical relationships found in nature.
