Julie Zarate: Twentieth Century Fox
Dont be surprised if some of the women in Julie Zarates Twentieth Century Fox exhibit look a lot like Julie Zarate. Thats what she meant to do. Zarate, whos been painting since 1999, says, I think most artists tend to do self-portraits without knowing it. They become familiar with their own features, and they incorporate them in whatever they do. Rather than thinking of that as a handicap, she embraced it. Zarate now takes photos of herself and uses them as her models.
Zarate says shes self-taught, except for the mandatory art class in high school. Twentieth Century Fox marks her return to the gallery where she had her first show, Talento Bilingüe de Houston. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. 333 South Jensen Drive. Through February 29, 2008. For information, call 713-222-1213 or visit tbhcenter.org. Free.
