Houston author Katherine Center gives her characters plenty of second chances in The Lost Husband, her latest novel, which she's reading and signing at Brazos Bookstore today. In Husband, Libby Moran has suddenly become a widow. Overnight she loses everything and finds herself living with her hyper-critical mom and sleeping on a pull-out sofa. Not exactly the life she had imagined for herself. Then an aunt offers Libby a chance to work on a farm. Willing to do anything to get off the sofa at her mom's house, she accepts. But life on a working goat farm isn't what she imagined she'd be doing either. The small rural community is filled with oddballs. There's a feed store clerk who's also a psychic, and a farm manager with a dark past. And now there's Libby, a woman who so far has seemed happy to fade into the background of her own life story.
