Houston crime author Kathryn Casey tells a twisted tale about a 2006 murder in her latest true crime book, Deadly Little Secrets: The Minister, His Mistress, and a Heartless Texas Murder. The minister in the title is Matt Baker. The mistress is Vanessa Bulls. Eleven years younger than Baker, she met him in 2005 at church, where he was counseling her through her divorce. The murder victim is Baker’s wife, Kari. Baker said his wife killed herself because she was despondent over the death of her 16-month-old daughter seven years earlier. But Kari’s family didn’t believe him and started their own investigation, eventually putting together enough evidence to convince authorities to take Baker to trial. The star witness in his case? His then-ex-mistress, Vanessa Bulls. A veteran author, Casey spent 17 months on the project, interviewing people on all sides of the story, including Baker as he sat in a Texas prison. Casey discusses and signs copies of Deadly Little Secrets today at 6:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8597 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
