KOLD Radio, Whitefish Bay
Imagine Garrison Keillor without the irony, and you get some idea of what talk radio in small-town Minnesota sounds like, at least according to Phil Olson's KOLD Radio, Whitefish Bay. The comedy of oddballs opens in a lonely bar that's got a one-room radio station attached. Lars is in the middle of his talk show about ice fishing, called Crappie Talk (pronounced "croppy," for the uninformed). He tries hard, but his little show is filled with jokes like "And then there was the Norwegian who froze to death at the drive-in movie. He went to see Closed for Winter." It's no wonder Lars is losing advertisers and listeners to another, much more scintillating-sounding show, Book Beat. You have to see the play to find out what happens in this sweet story that the Los Angeles Times called "...Cheers meets WKRP in Cincinnati meets Newhart." 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Through February 6. Theatre Suburbia, 4106 Way Out West Drive. For information, call 713-682-3525 or visit www.theatresuburbia.com. $12 to $14.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 8. Continues through Feb. 6, 2010
