La fille du régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment)

Music fans won’t get a huge, Italian spectacle at the operatic comedy La fille du régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment), presented today by Opera in the Heights. Instead, OIH delivers what the company’s new Artistic Director Enrique Carreon-Robledo calls a fresh take on a precious French jewel. Set at the time of the Napoleonic Wars, La fille is the story of Marie, an orphan who was adopted by a group of French soldiers. After promising to marry a soldier, Marie falls in love with a civilian, causing friction among her adoptive fathers. Bursting with surprises and vigorous bel canto singing, La fille is a lighthearted look at love and loyalty.

Seven of the eight cast members of La fille are making both their role and company debuts. The role of Marie, which Carreon-Robledo says is among the most demanding in the operatic canon, is played by Erica Miller and Ashlyn Rust. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. October 2. Through October 2. Lambert Hall, 1703 Heights. For information, call 713-861-5303 or visit www.operaintheheights.org. $20.
Thursdays-Saturdays; Sun., Oct. 2. Starts: Sept. 22. Continues through Oct. 2, 2011
