Loplop Presents Loplop

Loplop Presents Loplop, a new play by Peter Wittenberg Jr., is currently making its world premiere at the Obsidian Art Space. In the play, Frida, stuck caring for her schizophrenic twin brother Lyle, feels her own life is passing her by. And her charming best friend Cassie agrees — she thinks Frida needs to loosen up, both emotionally and sexually.

Loplop drops us into Frida’s 30th birthday party. In the classic party-that’s-much-more-than-a-party setting, things go wrong, people say funny things, people say tragic things and, somewhere along the way, the characters convince you to care about them.

Wittenberg says he based the Frida character on a figure he saw in Max Ernst’s painting Loplop Presente Loplop. “On seeing it at the Menil, I instantly fell in love with it,” he says. “The character in the painting is presenting a picture of himself which is neither as rich nor as colorful as the real character. I thought of a character who forgot how beautiful she really is.”

Wittenberg says Loplop sat in his closet for a good number of years after he wrote it. But two years ago, he decided that “it was time to get back in the game.” He dug the script for Loplop out of his closet and handed it to Leighza Walker, managing director at Obsidian Art Space, who liked it and asked to direct it. She assembled a cast and, according to Wittenberg, “things are looking pretty darn good.” 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Through January 29. 3522 White Oak.
