Opera and free are not two words that commonly appear in the same sentence, but today the Houston Grand Opera puts on a show at Miller Outdoor Theatre that is not only gratis but one of the most adored masterworks of all time: Madame Butterfly. Sung in Italian with English subtitles, Puccinis century-old opera tells of Cio-Cio-San, a Japanese geisha who marries an American naval officer who promptly impregnates her and returns to sea. She devotedly waits for him, tending to their young son, but the circumstances surrounding his return break her heart and have broken countless audiences hearts ever since. 8 p.m. Friday and Sunday. 6000 Hermann Park Drive.
