Madea's Big Happy Family
Actor/writer/director Tyler Perry has built an entertainment empire on the back of a feisty, gray-haired, pistol-packing grandma named Madea. The star of several stage plays and films, Madea is played by the more than six-foot-tall Perry wearing flowered housedresses and slippers. Larger than life, she's loud, rude and sometimes criminally inclined; she's also wise, nurturing and just as likely to hand out praise as she is punishment. In Madea's Big Happy Family, the matriarch is surrounded by equally exuberant and eccentric relatives and loved ones. This is the first time in five years that Perry has brought the razor-witted Madea to the stage. Although the casts in other Madea productions are almost exclusively black, this homespun, folksy comedy long ago crossed over to mainstream audiences. See Perry step into Madea's rather large shoes at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Toyota Center, 1510 Polk. For information, call 866-446-8449 or visit www.tylerperry.com. $55 to $80.
