Martin Luther King Jr Day Peace Rally
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remains a towering civil rights figure even 45 years after his assassination. Dr. King led an American revolution in race relations through nonviolent protests that eventually culminated in the end of legal segregation. No other figure in our country's history is like him, and kids can learn more about this amazing man at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Peace Rally at the Houston Children’s Museum today. Visitors may participate in a peace march down the museum's Kid's Hall, then hear Dr. King's famous ''I Have a Dream'' speech and a presentation by the winner of the annual Gardere Oratory competition. This year's theme for the contest was ''If you could talk directly to Dr. King about your dream for our future, what would you tell him?'' Kids may also pin up representations of their own hopes for the future on a Dream Wall, hear the Young Harmonies of Houston choir, draw self-portraits and enjoy lots more hands-on activities.
