Its hard to be funny at ten in the morning, says John Erler, the mastermind behind Master Pancake Theater, as he struggles to wake up for his interview. (Sorry we woke you up, John.) We understand Erler, who was a member of Austins popular Mr. Sinus, is used to staying up late, sending up classic films in the style of
Mystery Science Theater. That group disbanded, but Erler has put together a new set of movie mockers, now called Master Pancake Theater. Today Erler takes on
Conan the Barbarian starring the Governator at Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park. Anything with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it has got to be a good, you know, easy laugh, says Erler. There are several great scenes featuring condensation glimmering on Arnolds pectorals. We know Houston loves its humidity, even when its centered around Austrian nipples.
Erler, along with the other Master Pancake resident, Joe Parons, and guest mockers Mac and David, two young students of comedy, will provide the commentary for the evening. The night also features a drinking game (remember, the Alamo Drafthouse serves drinks) and a live reenactment of Conans battle with Thulsa Doom, more games and free pancakes. Erler recommends showing up at around 6:30 p.m. for the preshow fun. The mockery begins at 7:30 p.m.
