Contemporary audiences are used to seeing live performances of concerts and operas broadcast to theaters around the country. Now Broadway is getting in on the act the 2010 Tony-winning musical Memphis, taped at a recent live performance, is coming to a screen near you. Loosely based on legendary music producer Sam Phillips, whose Sun Studio recording studio in Memphis is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark, this Best Mu-sical winner by composer David Bryan (of Bon Jovi) with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change) is like Jersey Boys mashed up with Hairspray. Its a hot romp through the early days of rock and roll, when music got its hips in a swivel for the likes of Elvis Presley, Bill Haley and Fats Domino.
