Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2009 homage to fantastic cinema, Micmacs recalls the imaginative, comedic work of Buster Keaton and Terry Gilliam. First orphaned, later accidentally shot in the head, the gentle, dreamy video store clerk Bazil becomes an instrument of revenge when he takes on the heartless military-industrial complex with his newfound family, a ragtag band of seven outsider characters who take him into their garbage-strewn world. It's a place with loud sight gags, a ton of whimsy, and a wacky, inventive storyline, like they used to make before talkies. They have so much hope and imagination, you can't help but root for Bazil and his crazy friends. 11:55 p.m. Friday and Saturday. River Oaks Theatre, 2009 West Gray. For information, call 713-866-8881 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com. $9.75.
Fri., Dec. 17, 11:55 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 18, 11:55 p.m., 2010
