Mountainfilm on Tour in Houston
The latest addition to Houston’s film festival line-up, much to the delight of local cinephiles, is a traveling presentation of Mountainfilm on Tour in Houston. The festival, which has been going strong since 1979, takes place each Memorial Day weekend in Telluride, Colorado. This year, with the help of Shushana and Jack Castle, two local film buffs who have been longtime fans of Mountainfilm, Houstonians will have the opportunity to view a kaleidoscope of inspiring and eye-opening documentary shorts sampled from the festival.
On the schedule is the 2010 Mr. Happy Man by Matt Morris, which chronicles the story of Johnny Barnes, a lovable Bermudan nearing 90 years old. Barnes wakes up every morning before dawn and takes up his post at a busy intersection, a traffic circle outside Hamilton, Bermuda. He’s there every weekday from 4 to 10 a.m., where he waves, blows kisses and shouts, “I love you!” to passersby who are making the deary commute. (Bermuda is reported to have the most dense traffic in the world.) In press notes, Morris reports Barnes is still on duty at the intersection.
Other films include the 2010 UK release Dark Side of the Lens by Mickey Smith, a surf photographer who tackles some of Ireland’s heaviest and coldest surf waves, and the 2009 I Am by Tom Shadyac, director of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor and Bruce Almighty, who here delivers an introspective, autobiographical film that questions the relationship between prosperity and happiness.
In addition to a multitude of films, there will be guest panels, filmmaker discussions and receptions. 7 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, 6 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Rice University, 6100 Main. For information, e-mail email@example.com or visit www.mountainfilm.org/houston. $15 to $50.
Fri., March 30, 7 p.m.; Sat., March 31, 6 p.m., 2012
