Once on This Island
Romeo and Juliet meet The Little Mermaid in Lynn Ahrens and Steven Flaherty’s charming Once on This Island, a Caribbean musical about love, death and storytelling. The one-act, song-filled story, which takes place in Haiti, follows Ti Moune, a peasant girl. On one side of the island are the poor peasants; on the other side live the wealthy landowners. When Ti Moune prays to understand her purpose in life, the gods laugh at her, but one god pities her and gives her love. Another god is offended and wagers a bet on weather love or death is more powerful. Ti Moune becomes the girl who tests their bet when she saves the life of a wealthy boy who crashes during a terrible storm. She promptly falls in love with him, only to have to eventually choose between her own life or the life of her love. Mystical, tender and full of hummable island tunes, this family-friendly show is a great way to celebrate the fall. See Once on This Island at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Through November 12. Applause Theatre, 6608 F.M. 1960 West. For information, call 281-440-4111 or visit www.applausetheatre.org. $14.
