There's something about VHS tape that just cannot be conveyed by any other video medium. The kind of '80s/almost steampunk mechanical aspects of it, the big, bulky packaging that showed off the box art are enticing. Josh Johnson takes us down to the corner of Memory Lane and Nostalgia Boulevard with his documentary Rewind This! Johnson interviews some of the greatest filmmakers to ever grace tape, people like Ghost in the Shell's Mamoru Oshii and the one and only Charles Band of Full Moon Entertainment. It's a movie for collectors, but it's also a treat for anyone that can remember what it was like to hold a movie in your hands like an artifact instead of just streaming it from some fictional cloud. Or more scandalously, reliving the guilty joy of pausing and rewinding to treasure steamy sex scenes or particularly gruesome ax-murders, or to absorb every detail for a Rocky Horror costume. Rewind This! is a chronicle of a unique and wonderful age in film history.
