Were trying to get the most marginal sort of work, says Noel Lawrence, who works with Other Cinema, the pioneering movie house in San Francisco that inspired Houstons Aurora Picture Show. A lot of [our films] are probably too out there to find on the so-called independent film avenues like the Sundance Channel or whatever.
Todays screening will feature a look at several Other Cinema projects. Also on the ticket are works from Negativland, a collective of filmmakers who also remix television and take advantage of the fair use laws, and The 70s Dimension, which takes a look back on commercials from the decade that gave us polyester and smiley faces. Lawrence will hang around town for tomorrows program, Underworld Cinema: The Life and Work of J.X. Williams, which will include a screening of the cult film Peep Show and a lecture by Lawrence about his life and career. 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. Aurora Picture Show, 800 Aurora.
