Passions and Meditations: Alexei Lubimov

When it's art vs. politics, it's usually politics that wins — at first. Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov, making his Da Camera debut, ''Passions and Meditations: Alexei Lubimov,'' is a prime example of art winning in the end. Lubimov lived the first 40-something years of his life under strict Soviet rule. Authorities there, unhappy with his penchant for Western and modern music, prevented him from traveling internationally. When political restrictions were lifted in the 1980s, Lubimov, recognized as a world-class talent, soon earned legions of fans during several international tours. He's been preaching, metaphorically speaking, the gospel of an expanded classical musical repertoire ever since, performing centuries-old works along with contemporary compositions. Today Lubimov performs a mixed program of standard and modern works by Russian composers. The concert includes Liszt's Sleepless, Question and Answer (Schlaflos, Frage und Antwort) and Galina Ustvolskaya's Sonata No. 6.
