Jennifer Baichwal’s Payback is a documentary based on best-selling novelist Margaret Atwood’s nonfiction book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth. It explores the idea of an individual’s debt to society, something that money alone can’t pay back. What is the effect of environmental debt, such as when the BP oil disaster dumped almost 5 million barrels into the Gulf of Mexico? What debt is accrued when Florida tomato farmers mistreat and abuse their workers? Payback is a brilliant and stark look at what exactly we owe each other.
