Percival Everett: Percival Everett by Virgil Russell

Writer Percival Everett’s latest novel, Percival Everett by Virgil Russell, is a story inside a story inside a story. Among the intertwined characters is a man visiting his elderly father in a nursing home. The father writes the novel he imagines his son would write, if the son were to write a novel. Or maybe it’s the novel the son thinks the father would write for the son? It’s hard to tell, because Everett keeps the narration purposefully vague and shifting.

Everett plays with the reader as much as with form in the work. There’s also a woman who seeks an apprenticeship with a painter, claiming she’s his daughter; a contractor named Murphy who can’t tell the difference between the two brothers who have hired him; and via Murphy’s troubled dreams, Nat Turner, who imagines the life of William Styron.
