Petrouchka and Beethoven

Symphony buffs, rejoice. Acclaimed conductor Pablo Heras-Casado — described by the San Francisco Classical Voice as “truly a conductor beyond convenient pigeonholes, with an enormous repertoire” — is returning to Houston after his debut here last July for Petrouchka and Beethoven. This time, he’ll be joined by renowned pianist and Rice University piano professor Jon Kimura Parker, who has performed from New York to Sarajevo. The two will collaborate in an evening featuring works of three of the greats: Schumann, Beethoven, and Stravinsky.

Soak up the sonorous sounds of the Houston Symphony Orchestra while they perform Schumann’s “Overture to Manfred,” Stravinsky’s 1947 revision of “Petrouchka” and Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” which will be played by Parker. Should your classical ear need a bit of tuning, join the pre-concert talk to brush up on the material, 45 minutes prior to showtime. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, . Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-224-7575 or visit www.houstonsymphony.org. Tickets start at $25.
