P.J. O'Rourke

You may or may not agree with the main tenets of the Cato Institute think tank - that free markets should reign, Social Security should be privatized and government in general is not to be trusted - but most everyone agrees that P.J. O'Rourke, a Cato fellow, is pretty damn hilarious. O'Rourke, a prolific political satirist who got his start at the National Lampoon, is responsible for more than a dozen books, not to mention a treasure trove of quotes, such as, "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys." O'Rourke's address, part of a three-and-a-half hour long seminar, is called, "Don't Vote: It Just Encourages the Bastards" (named after the title of his most recent book). It's meant to make you laugh, but if you're also moved to do something about our political system, like, oh, say, maybe vote, we're sure O'Rourke wouldn't mind. 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 14. The Four Seasons Hotel, 1300 Lamar. For information, call 202-218-4617 or visit $50.
