Poison Pen Reading Series: Matthew Zapruder

In “Poem for California,” Matthew Zapruder starts with an ankle scar and ends up pondering how he went from academic nomad to soon-to-married settler. The author often calls upon the everyday to unlock the mysteries of life. “When I write about something I don’t know why it’s important or meaningful, I just get the sense that it is,” he says. “I’ll often begin there and follow it, and then the poem is kind of a record of following ‘the thing’ somewhere.”

Zapruder’s stream-of-consciousness style is academic, but with popular appeal. National Public Radio and Publishers Weekly, among others, named Zapruder’s latest book, Come On All You Ghosts, as a top release of 2010. He’s also had gigs at top-tier writing programs such as the University of Houston, University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of California – Berkeley. He reads today as part of the Poison Pen Reading Series, our local convocation of drunks and smart people who like to drink. 8:30 p.m. Poison Girl, 1641 Westheimer.
