Poison Pen Reading Series: Matthew Zapruder
In Poem for California, Matthew Zapruder starts with an ankle scar and ends up pondering how he went from academic nomad to soon-to-married settler. The author often calls upon the everyday to unlock the mysteries of life. When I write about something I dont know why its important or meaningful, I just get the sense that it is, he says. Ill often begin there and follow it, and then the poem is kind of a record of following the thing somewhere.
Zapruders stream-of-consciousness style is academic, but with popular appeal. National Public Radio and Publishers Weekly, among others, named Zapruders latest book, Come On All You Ghosts, as a top release of 2010. Hes also had gigs at top-tier writing programs such as the University of Houston, University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of California Berkeley. He reads today as part of the Poison Pen Reading Series, our local convocation of drunks and smart people who like to drink. 8:30 p.m. Poison Girl, 1641 Westheimer.
