Preservons La Creation (Let’s Preserve the Creation)

In Texas, vying for the title of biggest anything is a common pursuit, though it is likely to involve cattle, produce or the size of a draft beer rather than anything particularly artistic. That’s why UP Art Studio — under the direction of founder Sebastien “Mr. D” Boileau — has set out to complete the biggest mural in Houston. The final painting, titled Preservons la Creation (Let’s Preserve the Creation), will cover 9,750 square feet of surface (60 feet high and a city block wide) and appropriate imagery from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel masterpiece The Creation of Adam (a bearded God reaching out to Adam — you’ve seen it), in a contemporary Houston setting. The France-born Mr. D, who was hugely influenced by the American graffiti movement of the ’70s and ’80s, hopes to bring together the disciplines of fine art and urban street art, using concrete as his canvas. Proceeds from ticket sales to mural related events, including today’s opening, will benefit a future children’s hospital mural project. There’s a VIP preview 7 to 10 p.m. on June 5. Opening event is 3 to 11 p.m. on June 7. 2800 San Jacinto. For information, call 713-876-8802 or visit upartstudio.org. $10 to $100.
