Return of the Native
Houston hipsters are no strangers to former Houston Press contributor Brian McManus and his alter ego Filthy McNasty, front man of the funk rock spectacle the Rhinestone Life. But what can fans expect from the Life's homecoming performance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Starbucks Mixed Media Music Series?
"The same old show," says McManus, who moved to Philadelphia last year. For those unfamiliar with a "typical" Rhinestone Life performance, during past shows McManus, in his Filthy McNasty guise, has worn pink tuxedos and parkas with tights, danced on bars with a thong on his head, downed audience members' drinks at will and flailed around the stage, gyrating on any surface he deems fit for his pelvis.
McNasty may be the attention-grabbing centerpiece of the Rhinestone Life, but his backing band members hold their own as a funky rock-soul outfit, and they'll make sure you're shaking your ass before you laugh it off. Things are going to get rowdy, but lucky for the MFAH, all the priceless goods will be upstairs.
The Rhinestone Life will take the stage after locals DJ Ceeplus and the House of Bad Knives, Hydroponic Sound System and Brooklyn's DJ Ayres. Emcees Craig "BBC" Long and E.P. Sarah will kick things off at 8 p.m.
Sat., Aug. 12, 8 p.m.
