"Richard Martinez: NEW"
One of the joys of being a gallery owner, says Linda Darke, is the opportunity to introduce new artists to Houston. San Antonio-based Richard Martinez isn't exactly a new artist - he's already had shows in other cities - but he is new to Houston, and Darke is happy to present him in his first-ever exhibition here. "Artists from across the country come to Texas, for teaching jobs, for the wonderful art scene...for the questionable weather," she laughs. "People like Richard, who have their degrees from great schools, bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and talent with them when they come here, and I get to introduce them." Darke is especially excited about the exhibit "Richard Martinez: NEW." "He takes these beautiful Baroque and Rococo...canvases that are beautifully constructed and elaborate, and then the surfaces are very minimal, very 20th century and painterly," she says. "I find him fascinating because the work is beautiful and elegant, but also awkward and ambiguous at the same time." Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. November 12. Regular viewing hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through November 27. Darke Gallery, 320B Detering. For information, call 713-542-3802 or visit www.darkegallery.com.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 12. Continues through Nov. 27, 2010
