Ride This Wave

This weekend, there'll be a wave of Latinos crashing into Houston. Relax, Minutemen, it's the Latin Wave: Latin American Film Festival. The annual three-day event featuring six international films and documentaries concludes today with a packed schedule. First up at 1 p.m. is La Sierra, a documentary that follows three young people over the course of a year in Medellín, Colombia. Edison, the leader of the group, has fathered six children with six different women. Cielo is a widowed teen mother, and has a boyfriend in jail. Jesus is a drugged-up gang member with a death wish. The film is startling, violent and ultimately, poignant. Be sure to stick around for a panel discussion at 3 p.m. with the Latin Wave filmmakers, moderated by Richard Peña, program director, for the Film Society of Lincoln Center. And later today, catch Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus at 5 p.m., Al Otro Lado at 7 p.m. and Punto y Raya at 8:30 p.m. Festival runs from Friday, April 28, through today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet.
Sun., April 30, 3 p.m.
