"Salon des Refusés 2011"

Artists whose work wasn’t accepted by the Lawndale Art Center’s “The Big Show” still have a showcase in Gallery M Squared’s “Salon des Refusés 2011.” According to organizer and artist Emily Sloan, the exhibit gives the public a chance to judge for themselves — literally, since there’s a “People’s Choice” award that comes with a cash prize.

Now in its second year, the exhibit was inspired by the 1863 “Salon des Refusés” exhibit held in Paris, which was comprised of works rejected by the official Paris Salon. Among the artists for the Paris “Salon des Refusés” were Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro and James Whistler. Sloan can’t guarantee this year’s Houston exhibit will have artists of that caliber, but you never know. There’s an opening reception 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 1. Regular viewing hours are noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through July 9. 339 West 19th Street. Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 1. Continues through July 9, 2011
