Sam Demaris, known to many Houston comedy fans as one-fourth of the cast on the popular Whiskey Brothers podcast, brings his unique brand of storytelling to the Houston Joke Joint. “I’m a narcissist, so I’m gonna talk about me,” the Houston-born comic begins, before bursting into laughter. In addition to performing for the troops with the Maxim Magazine Real Men of Comedy Tour, Demaris proudly claims to have worked in 22 different states. “Traveling is one of the coolest things about the job. I’ve been to some really, really awesome towns that I never would have gone to in my life if it weren’t for comedy.” Demaris adds sheepishly, “I have a lot of fun in Little Rock, Arkansas. That was not on my bucket list of places to go.”
Whiskey Brothers podcast followers will be happy to know the group is as strong as ever. “That’s really taken off,” Demaris says. Co-hosting alongside fellow Houston comedy locals Rob Mungle, Slade Ham and John Wessling, Demaris enjoys the collaborative aspect often missing in stand-up. “I’ve known all those guys over ten years. We came up doing comedy together; we know each other’s styles.”
For those unfamiliar with his act, Sam warns audiences to “expect the unexpected.” He says, “I go [onstage] with a plan and I usually abandon it about five minutes in. [The show’s] going to go wherever it ends up going.”
