Scott Pasfield: Gay in America

It took photographer Scott Pasfield two years to travel to all 50 states, taking photographs and collecting the stories of gay men for his art book Gay in America. The variety of the men's backgrounds and outlooks is amazing. From doctors to lawyers, husbands and fathers to activists and soldiers, the only thing they all have in common is that they are gay. For some that’s meant a difficult life filled with rejection and anger, while others have experienced acceptance and - happiness.

The photographs are as surprisingly varied as the stories. The cover shot is of an Asian American soldier standing proudly at attention. Inside there’s a family portrait of gay men with their young daughter. One shows a group of older men, another shows a young man outdoors with his dog. Other photos are of couples, young men lounging casually, an interracial couple smiling into the camera. Throughout, the images and the stories remind readers that there’s nothing stereotypical about these individuals.
