How terrifying would it be to watch a scary movie, only to realize it was watching you right back? In Sinister, a writer named Ellison (played by Ethan Hawke) and his family have just moved into a new home. Ellison is hoping for some peace and quiet so he can finish writing his book. Instead he finds terror and evil. The house’s previous residents were horribly murdered. When Ellison discovers a cache of their old family movies, he unleashes a dark spirit that inhabits the on-screen images. As he watches the movies, the spirit watches him.
Ethan Hawke gives an amazing performance as Ellison, grounding the paranormal narrative. The atmosphere is helped immensely by a score from Christopher Young, who previously ratcheted up the tensions in films like Hellraiser. Even the most desensitized horror fans will find themselves drawn into the slow burn of the film as Young’s electronic score full of sampled screams plays the nerves until they’re raw.
Today’s screening is a special preview before the film’s official October 5 opening. 7:30 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park, 531 South Mason Road. For information, call 281-492-6900 or visit www.drafthouse.com. $10.
