Stephen Hunter: Soft Target

It’s Black Friday and America’s biggest mall is jammed with 10,000 shoppers — and 12 terrorists. In Soft Target, the new thriller by Pulitzer Prize (for film criticism) winner Stephen Hunter, just three men stand between certain death for the shoppers and any hope at rescue. There’s Ray Cruz, a former Marine sniper who’s one of the hundreds of shoppers trapped in the mall. He’s got a plan for turning the tables on the terrorists, but he doesn’t have a gun. Outside the mall, FBI agent Dave McElroy has a gun, but his superiors have tied his hands; all he can do is watch as the terrorists put their deadly plan into action. Also outside is State Police Commandant Douglas Obodo, in charge of negotiating with the terrorists. He’s determined to resolve the situation peacefully, but the gunmen have other plans — ones that involve as many dead bodies as possible.

Stephen Hunter discusses and signs Soft Target today at 6:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8697 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
